South Africa - Bicycle Tour Adventure, Day 14
Pictures and Stories About Bicycle Adventures
Cycle through Natal Midlands, Winterton (Dodge Potholes),
uKhahlambra Drakensberg Mountains (Dragon Mountains),
Farm & Zulu Country, and Deconstruct Tandem; 21 Nov 2014
Photographic Highlights of the Day
Above: Terry and the Bee, standing in Zulu Country with the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa.
Above: Our Final Tandem Bicycle Destination Picture. We were standing at the entrance of the Royal Natal National Park of KwaZulu Natal Province. the Royal Natal NP is a Provincial Park, named before National Park meant state managed. This ended our Bicycle Tour but not our continued vacation in South Africa, we still had 7 more days to be regular tourists in South Africa, 6 of which were to be spent in the Cape Town area.
Driving out of Durban
(South Africa)
Above Left: Yet another high humidity day. We do miss the rain but it comes close on the bicycle.
Above Right: 1.5 Meters of Clearance - I like that! For the record, while our bike was support carried in high traffic areas, we found the drivers, all driver, in South Africa to be very respectful and courteous toward us.
Above: We stopped at a Rest & Fuel Stop and saw an old time Flat Bed Horse pulled Wagon-Trailer and an old Steam Engine.
Our Tandem Tour: From Bergville to the 'Royal Natal Game Reserve'
The Night Destination is the 'Tower of Pizza B&B'
Above Left: Flowers in bloom in Bergville.
Above Right: Next town, Rookdale.
Above Left: Adobe styled huts.
Above Right: Weaver Nests.
Above Left: Cotton like bloom.
Above Right: Weaver Nests.
Above Left: MY PHOTO: Probably a Pin-tailed Wydah (SA has about 10 birds with long tails, this guy seemed to be Black and White, mostly black from this photo angle). We saw a lot of this type of bird on this day but they were shy and we never got a closeup picture.
Above Right: GOBIRDING PHOTO: This Pin-tailed Wydah photo is from www.gobirding.eu.
Above Left: Tractor and Trailer - we waved at each other.
Above Right: Distance Marker.
Above: Dragon Mountains.
Above Left: Pedaling by Rookdale.
Above Right: Adobe or Mud Covering is a common indigenous construction method in these parts.
Above: Cattle Country.
Above Left: Foothills.
Above Right: Extra Insulator on the wire pole.
Above Left: Our first glance of Woodstock Lake - We're heading WNW now and NW in general after passing Woodstock Dam.
Above Right: Two young men talking under a tree. Usually this is where the 'Cow Boys' sit in warm temperatures. It is about 90F/30C at the moment.
Above: Woodstock Lake (I took my wife to Woodstock!).
Above: Rondavels of the area.
Above Left: We waved.
Above Right: Shade is scarce.
Above Left: We're going left.
Above Right: Lady carrying her own shade.
Above Left: Our first sign with our destination, Royal Natal.
Above Right: So, what does the termite mound tell you about how deep the water table is?
Above Left: A place for lunch, too early yet for us.
Above Right: Pole?
Above Left: Home made cinderblock, homemade mortar. Scottish colors.
Above Right: Goat herd.
Above Left: We are taking a break under a tree. Sometimes the population density seems to be at sustained capacity.
Above Right: Terry and the Bee take a snack break under a rare roadside tree.
Above Left: Sheep in the field.
Above Right: Cattle in the field.
Above Left: At first I thought that it was a church event, I never did figure it.
Above Right: We're cycling more NW now.
Above Left: All of the White Spots in the tree are roosting Egrets.
Above Right: Tholithemba High School. It is peculiar that we have not seen a cement sidewalk anywhere today, but there is a cement sidewalk next to this high school.
Above Right: This home is an old airplane rear fuselage. Note that for windows, someone used car doors with roll up/down windows and welded them into place.
Above: Zulu village suburbs.
Above: Playground and Middle School.
Above Left: We're going to [Royal Natal] National Park. It happens that Mont Aux Sources is on the Lesotho-South Africa Border.
Above Right: A Doublewide Rondavel.
Above Left: We're going left. The 'H' of Harrismith [Town] is missing.
Above Right: We are getting closer to the Drackensberg Mountains.
Above Left: The mountain clouds are getting interesting.
Above Right: Every cow should have an Egret or two.
Above Left: Cow and Egret.
Above Right: We've arrived at a tourist area, I can tell because of the Bicycle Caution Sign. Thandanini is the name of the Tourist Center and it may be the name of the local Tribe or Village or both.
Above Left: Bad news, the Thandanini building is closed and locked up. It is a nice looking building.
Above Right: Three important things are happening here. One, the psychological effect of the fence is holding back one set of goats. Two, some goat will always climb the tallest thing in a field. Three, if there is a rock to climb, a goat will find it.
Above: Beautiful Countryside.
Above Left: Love the backdrop.
Above Right: Cannibals - I think that it was a restaurant once upon a time.
Above Left: This is a Sale's Ambush - A vehicle must slow down for the narrowed bridge lane and the kids will step out to impede progress and the kids will hold tourist items to sell. Luckily, thses kids know the people on bicycles don't stop to buy anything.
Above Right: Another view of the Drakenberg Mountains and a lovely pastoral foreground.
Above Left: Grid Ahead.
Above Right: Our Final Tandem Bicycle Destination Picture. We were standing at the entrance of the Royal Natal National Park of KwaZulu Natal Province. We are at the Park's east end entrance, the Park's west end borders on the Country of Lesotho.
Driving to our B&B called The Tower of Pizza
(Pun on Tower of Piza, They used to make Pizzas out of a Converted Grain Silo)
Above Left: Mountains in the background.
Above Right: Turn-Off for Tower of Pizza B&B. Big storm spooling-up in the distance.
Above Left: Another Sign for the Tower of Pizza B&B.
Above Right: The actually Tower of the original
Pizza making operation.
Task Order: Check-In, Break-Down and Pack the Tandem, Clean-Up, Eat Dinner
(Only the Final Task has Pictures)
Above Left: The Menu has Metal Plate Covers with Punched Lettering and Emblem. The Tower of Pizza's Symbol is a twist on the old Etruscan Wolf.
Above Right: Oddly, NO CASH is accepted here.
Above Left: Carling Black Label is big in South Africa (along with Castle).
Above Right: Menu (in Rand).
Above Left: There is an upstairs too, I just wanted a picture of the straw roof.
Above Right: Twas Good.
We had another grand day in Africa; tomorrow we visit Joberg and then fly to Cape Town.
