Day 2 - Sparwood, Hosmer, to Fernie, mostly on BC Hwy 3
Above Left: Morning comes and the Bee is ready.
Above Right: Long shadows and tall peaks keep the valley cool; we were wearing our windproof rain jackets over thick flannel shirts.
Above Left: It's dark in the shadows. We run with a Son Edelux II 6v AC Halogen Headlight System (German, Taillight too).
Above Right: The countryside is beautiful but we are used to being in it, off-road.
Above Left: The Elk River is on our right-hand/west side now, ever since crossing it just before Sparwood.
Above Right: Climbing the Railroad Bridge.
Above Left: Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR) Mainline. My Grandfather worked for the CPR in the late 1920s or the early 1930s in the Alberta and British Columbia regions (to include Banff and Hotel Lake Louise). Note that my Grand Father worked on the Railroad when it was considered Fasionably Cool!
Above Right: Aspen forest.
Hosmer, BC
Above Left: Riding south on the Crowsnest Hwy (BC 3).
Above Right: This old Elk River Hotel and a few local houses are Hosmer, BC.
Above Left: Crossing the Elk River at Hosmer, BC.
Above Right: The Elk River at Hosmer, BC. We are about half-way from Sparwood to Fernie.
Above Left: An un-intended selfie and a nice ranch home.
Above Right: Riding south on the Crowsnest Hwy (BC 3).
Above Left: The Elk River.
Above Right: Riding south on the Crowsnest Hwy (BC 3).
Above Left: Dickens Road is ahead.
Above Right: Dickens Road is our turn-off from Hwy 3 to ride into Fernie in a more rural & car friendly setting.
Above Left: Remnant Fireweed in the foreground.
Above Right: White Rosehips! We have never seen such a thing before now.
Above Left: Common in rural settings, two neighbors stopped to talk. I just nodded at them as we went by, they were still there when we went around the next corner.
Above Right: The view southeast from Dickens Rd.
Fernie City Limits
Above Left: Fernie used to be an Oil Boom Town and this Wood Derrick is an actual relocated Fernie Drilling Structure from the Boom Days.
Above Right: Dennis and the Bee pose next to the official Fernie Welcome sign. Notice the old Derrick in the background. We are at the north end of town and next to BC Hwy 3 and we will either ride parallel to Hwy 3 or ride upon Hwy 3 all the way to our hotel for the night.
We have toured Fernie before, see our Fernie Walking Tour from June of 2017.
Above Left: We had a Covered Bridge to cross Fairy Creek.
Above Right: Fairy Creek.
Above Left: Elk River.
Above Right: We reached the Three Sisters Hotel. We have stayed there a few different times and we always enjoyed the stay and the nearby restaurants.
Summary
We had a very pleasant ride. We're used to traveling 8 mph on dirt roads and we probably averaged 15 mph on today's paved roads. We had time to be tourists in town, Fernie is similar to what Breckenridge used to be like in the USA, a winter Ski Town.
