Bicycle Tour of Peloponnese, Greece,
From Korinth to Olympia
September/October, 2018
Day 8
Our Ferry Ship to Zakynthos was Canceled Due to the Hurricane.
The Itinerary Changed, We Packed-Up and Transported to Olympia.
We Toured the Village of Olympia by Foot and Visited the Olympia Museum.
Above: Packed-up and ready to depart the seaside city of Patras for the inland Olympia.
Above Left: We had arrived at Olympia, we were staying at the Europa Hotel, and the weather has made a temporary break for us.
Above Right: About to unload the bikes and gear. That is Jerry walking-by.
Above: We're walking to town, it's about a kilometer away (downhill to town) - This is some of the local flora.
Museum of Olympia
(Different from the Archeological Site's Olympia Museum)
Above Left: This is a Museum about this location of Olympia, Greece. There is another Museum at the Archeological Site that we will see in two days. The deep meaning of the overhead icons was never made known.
Above Right: This museum's sign states ΣΥΓΓΡΕΙΟΝ which literally translates by letters as “SUGGREION”. The first character's Sigma Symbol is unusual, in fact I don't remember seeing that character anywhere in Greece. “SUGGREION” roughly means SYNERGION (according to a Greek translator through an online Greek synonym interpreter). I've never come across that word either, especially with all of the museums that we have visited in Greece.
Above Left: Hercules killing the Nemean Lion - We visited Nemea on Day 3.
Above Right: Floor mosaic, discovered here in Olympia, depicting female rolls in the Olympics.
Above: So basically, there were 3 Grecian Game Sites, 2 in the Peloponnese area and one in the Attica area - We have been to each site:
Nemea
Athens
Olympia
Above Left: All Game's Athletes performed completely naked, except ...
Above Right: ... In some sports (like sword fighting), the Athletes wore Armor.
About the Champions
Downtown Olympia and the Walk Home
Above Left: The view west between buildings in Olympia.
Above Right: Olympia street graffiti.
Above Left: The view west over the Olympia grounds as we walked home.
Above Right: The view west of Olympia, on our uphill walk home.
Evening and Dinner at the Olympia Europa Hotel
Above Left: The last of daylight.
Above Right: The attendance for Dinner is light, tourists have been stranded all over Greece (and anywhere else in the path of the Hurricane). Oddly, tomorrow night there will not be an empty seat in the dining room for most of dinner, about 4 busses will show-up and another 6 half-buses will show-up.
Above Left: Dennis and Terry Struck dining at Olympia's Europa Hotel during a Mediterranean Hurricane.
Above Right: Dinner.
Summary
We all made the best day possible once it was known that Ferry Ship's trip to Zakynthos was canceled due to Hurricane activity. We went directly to Olympia, Greece, which was our scheduled destination for the following day. So, we just received an extra fun day to spend in Olympia. Terry and I spent half a day just visiting the Olympia Museum and we also walked around town and its shops for the remainder of the time. Terry and I had a wonderful evening and dinner together dining at the Europa Hotel.
