Hamburg: Morning, to the Reeperbahn (to see Beetles History)
Above Left: Our home for the next few days in Hamburg, the Hotel Asterhoff: For the record, we found the German hotel prices to be comparable to USA hotel pricing but with a little more bang to the buck for tourist and hotel services. It seems that everyone has a good attitude about their work in Germany.
Above Right: Just in case one was lost - a hotel couch cushion has the Latitude and Longitude written on the Cushion.
Above Left: Continental Breakfast at Hotel Asterhoff (Terry).
Above Right: Post boxes and a city Post Office is just a block away - we sent Post Cards to relatives. The postal colors in Germany are yellow (just like DHL) and Postal workers wear yellow jackets and drive yellow cars or bicycles.
Above Left: We have bought city bus passes - Fauna along the walk, Hamburg is a very Green city.
Above Right: More Flora.
Above Left: When one has a tiny car, they can park it any way that they want inside their parking space.
Above Right: Classic German building style.
Above Left: There are three hot acts in Hamburg at this time; Sister Act (based on the Movie), Tarzan, and the Lion King (also based on the Movie).
Above Right: Another Hamburg Hummel.
Above Left: OK, we're in the Reeperbahn District. The Reeperbahn evolved sort of as a No-Man's Land between the official Hamburg City and the Saint Pauli City. The name Reeperbahn (Rope Maker's Way) comes from Rope Making, back in the days of sailing ships, this area originally made and repaired long thick ropes. The area has always serviced the needs of sailors, ships, and shipping (and still does). Now the Reeperbahn District is an entertainment area that offers Shows, Clubs, Acts, and Love for sale. Germany has authorized 'Red Light' areas.
Note that the reason for my visit is to see the Night Club where the Beatles started.
Above Right: Strasse with many clubs (Reeperbahn).
Above Left: Setting up for a music show/band (Uebel und Gefährlich here in Hamburg), sponsored by Relentless energy drink. See the Relentless 2011 Show Schedule (the site will not be up for very long).
Above Right: Music sales and memorabilia for the Relentless music groups (popular, mostly German bands).
Above Left: St Pauli Pirates, I've seen these T-shirts on kids and adults all over Hamburg.
Above Right: A Chinese Restaurant - This is a big deal because the Nazi's just rounded up the Chinese in the Reeperbahn and just shot them, no trial, no prison camp, fini. The details were not listed in my walking tour brochure but it may have been a drug cleanup operation - Mao did the same thing in China. Anyway, it is a big deal to have a Chinese Restaurant in the Reeperbahn, I saw two restaurants.
Above Left: Reeperbahn Club.
Above Right: Reeperbahn Sex House.
Above: Hmm, I must be close to the Star Club.
Above Left: The original Star Club is closed, but this plaque and memorial was erected by the local club owners.
Above Right: A short list of some of the Acts that came through the Star Club.
Above Left: The Star Club remembrance marker.
Above Right: Polizei HQ, Reeperbahn. This building is as famous as Ft Apache, the Bronx, Harlem, LA, and Chicago's Police Department buildings. The Reeperbahn is shown on a weekly cop drama show in Germany and is featured in many German Police and Detective Movies - It's kind of famous in Germany.
Above: A little snack on my way home. I got to listen to a Spaniard and a German speak Spanish to one another, it was somehow strange yet cool.
Hamburg: Afternoon at the Wharfs
Above: Sea Maiden and her view of Altona river industry.
Above Left: Doorway near the river bank.
Above Right: Comical statue of a well known nautical couple (Popeye the Sailor Man and Olive Oil).
Above Left: Old town well spring enclosed by stairway/gateway enforcement from newer roadway above the bank road.
Above Right: Oktoberfest is coming. I did not realize it until later but the girl's dress with blue and white diagonal checkers represents the Bavarian Flag (once an independent country-state) - We will see this symbol again.
Above: Looking east toward the main city and warehouse district.
Above: This is funny: I took the pictures back to back from left to right, so the boat in the picture is the same boat in the stitched/composite picture. We're looking south across the Altona river.
Above Left: Seafood Delivery at a Lobster Restaurant, near the actual Hamburg Fisch Markt.
Above Right: There just has to be a joke here, these are the German words for Exit and Entrance (respectively).
Above Left: Shark Bar and seafood eatery.
Above Right: Hamburg's Altona River Fisch Markt.
Above Left: U-434 (a German made up marketing number) was a Soviet Tango Class Submarine built in 1976; the Russian B-515 was retired in 2000 and had a 78 man crew. It could do 16 knots submerged and 13 Knots on the surface; it had 3 diesel engines and was equipped with regular torpedoes as well as anti-ship mines.
