New England Fall Foliage Tandem Bicycle Tour:
A Supported Loop Tour from South Portland through Old Orchard Beach, Maine;
Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Amesbury, Massachusetts; Salem, New Hampshire;
Manchester, New Hampshire; Sanford, Maine; and back to South Portland;
October, 2017
Day 6 - Manchester, New Hampshire, to Sanford, Maine;
October, 2017
Above Left: It was a crisp cool morning but the weather forecast was predicting temperatures in the upper 70s, maybe in the low 80s (20-25c). I was finally wearing shorts (Jeans up to now). Basically, we would be heading northeast all day. Today, Judy is Guiding and Pam is driving the Support Vehicle.
Above Right: Manchester had a large suburban area, it took about an hour before we were actually in the country. Manchester is on the Merrimack River, but I don't think that we ever got close enough to see it yesterday. Today we are heading away from the Merrimack and we will get to do plenty of hill climbs and descents on this day.

Above Right: Judy stopped to take the same pictures that we are snapping of Massabesic Lake.
Above: Massabesic Lake, I think.

Above Left: The Candia Police were providing traffic safety for some road/side maintenance project. Here, we were near the north-end of the Candia patrol area and nearing the south end of the Deerfield area.
Above Right: This Cemetery - There was a lot here and we wished that we took more pictures. We were noticing some peculiarly interesting details, like compass points in the stone fence. The place is worthy of further review by a symbols specialist.
Above: Dennis and Terry Struck - We were really enjoying New England's Fall Foliage; we were located somewhere between Candia and Deerfield, NH, heading for Sanford, Maine (Photo by Pam).
Deerfield, NH
Above Left: Pond and Fall Foliage, just south of Deerfield.
Above Right: The Shell Gas Station SAG Stop at Deerfield. It was convenient for refreshment, I/O, and rest. We were 30 miles into a 64 mile day. There were plenty of Yellow Jacket bees around the snack foods, particularly around the sliced apples. Terry and I got stung, once each. In both cases we managed to accidently catch one in a clothing fold while sitting, behind the knee for me and just behind for Terry. I also bought a Red Bull from the petro station. We were the last ones in and the last ones out but we did see everyone in the group at the SAG Stop (situation normal for tandems to lag behind the singles, except for going downhill).

Above: Somewhere around here, we started seeing the hills with progressively longer climbs.
Above: We reached 47 MPH coming down this hill (I was a little slow with the camera).
Above: It took us a few seconds to realize what we had been seeing - These Tree Markers serve as Roadside Safety REFLECTORS; they are cut up License Plates nailed into these trees. The very existence of these very old trees being permitted next to the road speaks volumes.

Above Left: A view from the cockpit, we are in the middle of the right-column, just out of view at the top of the arc, somewhere around Rochester, NH.

Above Left: Terry and Dennis on the Bee - We never realized how difficult the timing for capturing both riders on a Tandem, until this ride (Bicycle Adventure #70) - Photo by Pam.

Above: The shadows are getting long again.
Above Left: Shoes in the overhead wire.
Above Right: We were at high ground and this Fire Watch Tower looked over miles of Maine Forest Land. We were about to start a long easy decent into the Sanford area.
Above Left: Another view of the Fire Watch Tower and the surrounding fall foliage.
Above Right: A quick peek at the Sanford Valley during mid-decent.
Sanford, Maine
Above Left: 64 Miles Later - The Sanford Inn.
Above Right: The Sanford Inn's Front Office, we all got to sleep in the back lot where it was quieter.
The Last Supper
Above: I did not realize it at the time but this would be our Last Supper together (L-R): Judy, Pam, Terry, Vickie, Karen, Steve, Gary, and Lil Karen.
Summary
It's awesome to ride with cool people.
We had a long but pleasant day, we did see the most fall colors of any day yet.
We have had zero cycling issues. This evening, before supper, we performed our only bike maintenance.
We topped off the tires and we took the slack out of our eccentric timing chains; that's it.
