South Africa - Bicycle Tour Adventure, Day 10
Pictures and Stories About Bicycle Adventures
Cross Border: Swaziland to South Africa;
Umfolozi NP (Rhino) - Vehicle Safari,
Big 5 + Antelope, iSimangaliso Wetland Park;
Zulu Country; St Lucia; 17 November 2014
Photographic Highlights of the Day
Above: Dennis and Terry Struck pose behind a real Warthog Sounder (group).
The Warthogs are warming themselves by the campfire.
Above: A Mosaic Art Mural located in the Hilltop Restaurant and Overview in Umfolozi NP, South Africa.
Above: The 'Big 6' varies from place to place, here they are including Trout. The Trout Fishing Industry has become big business.
Above: Warthog Family.
Above: A Vervet Monkey manages to sneak an abandoned meal at the Hilltop Outdoor Restaurant (Umfolozi NP, South Africa).
Above: Cape Glossy Starling (has Red eyes, versus similar colored Burchell's Starling with Black eyes).
Above: Rhinoceros (Umfolozi NP, South Africa).
Above: Elephant - Note the two birds flying on each side.
Breakfast at Mlilwane Game Sanctuary
Hippo Haunt Open Air Restaurant
Above Left: We woke up with a morning visitor, an African Millipede.
Above Right: The morning was cool and wet (even the Warthogs sought warmth).
Above Left: Village Weaver Birds (there are only 7 Weaver types around here).
Above Right: The dark bird with white dots for eyes (actually just forward its real eyes) is a Thick Billed Weaver. The bird with no black masking appears to be a variant of the Spectacled Weaver. The birds with black cheeks and chins are Village Weaver Birds.
Above Left: The morning view of the Bird Wildlife - This gentleman is focused on a Southern Red Bishop.

Above Left: Breakfast Server Lady.
Above Right: Local made Baskets.
Above: Terry asked our hostess for permission to take pictures of her hair. We have seen many similar hair styles and no two of them are the same. The hair weaving is always artistic with much weaving time spent, and unique.
Above: Warthogs warming up around the campfire (it is for real, they are alive).
Above: This tree is called a 'Fever Tree'. Once observed, the tree cannot be forgotten or mixed-up with other tree types. The name came from being associated with Malaria (before the Mosquito was identified as a carrier of infectious disease [parasitic protozoa]). Oddly, the Fever Tree leaf and stems have a natural Mosquito repellant. The Fever Tree is NOT to be confused with the Cinchona Tree, common name Quina, the source of anti malaria Quinine.
The Drive from Swaziland to iMfolozi/Hluhluwe NPs, South Africa
(Umfolozi NP and Hluhluwe NP are Two Parks with a
Common North and South Border)
Uneventful, the Best Kind of Drive
Above Left: A reminder that the waters of Mlilwane Game Sanctuary have crocodiles.
Above Right: Our weather for the day, still cloudy with chances of rain.
Above Left: A Cowboy and Cattle.
Above Right: A community market place.
Above Left: High School aged students walking to school - All schools have uniforms. Also note that if the temperature is less than 80F/27C, people will be in sweaters (as they are here).
Above Right: Swaziland High School and some sort of event.
Above: Customs and Immigration were simple for us (flags of each country, Swaziland left, South Africa right).
Above Left: Our interim destination is now on the signs (Hluhluwe NP).
Above Right: That's a Cooler.
Above Left: That is a Sugar Cane Truck.
Above Right: We're in the Big Bend area and this is sort of a break and holding area for Sugar Cane Trucks and Drivers.
Above: Sugar Cane Fields in different states of plant growth. Sugar Cane is a big cash crop below the escarpment of South Africa, Swaziland, and Mozambique.
Above Left: Msuzwana Creek/River.

Hluhluwe National Park

Above Right: The last park (Mlilwane Game Sanctuary) also had local cattle in front of the entrance.
Above: Hluhluwe National Park Entrance Notices - Terry already found some animals to watch.

Above Left: Warthog Babies.
Above Right: Terry is thoroughly engrossed in watching the baby warthogs play and run.
Above: Hluhluwe National Park Office, we needed to buy passes and use the conveniences. We're holding off for lunch at the 'Hilltop' restaurant.
