A Walk About Cape Town
Above Left: We stayed at the Adderly Hotel (on Adderly Street).
Above Right: The view north from our breakfast patio.
Above Left: The view south from our breakfast patio. Sometimes I had a tough time navigating in the southern hemisphere, The Sun is in the North!
Above Right: RARE: Urinal with a Cover Lid.
Above Left: Hair Styles in Africa.
Above Right: Red & Yellow Pin Protea.
Above Left: King Protea, the National Flower of South Africa. We have pictures of this growing wild on some of our earlier cycling days on tour in South Africa. This Flower always reminds me of the Little Shop of Horrors' famous line, "Seymour, FEED ME!"
Above Right: Ladies shopping with kids.
Above: This is becoming a rare sight, a Pay or Card Operated PUBLIC TELEPHONE.
Above Left: St George's Cathedral (The Cathedral Church of St George the Martyr) is an Anglican Cathedral. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cape Town and Desmond Tutu sometimes speaks/preaches there.
Above Right: Parliament Building (The Legislative, Executive, and Judicial government systems of South Africa are distributed across four Major Cities).
Above Left: We're looking for a Free Walking Tour of Cape Town (which are guided by college kids living on tips).
Above Center: The other side of the umbrella, the guy ended up as our guide (next picture).
Above Right: I'm the guy without the umbrella. It turned out that two of the other gals were attending the same conference as my gal.
"Jan Christiaan Smuts OM CH DTD ED KC FRS PC (24 May 1870 - 11 September 1950) was a prominent South African and British Commonwealth statesman, military leader and philosopher. In addition to holding various cabinet posts, he served as prime minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 until 1924 and from 1939 until 1948. He was a supporter of racial segregation based on separate territory for blacks and whites, but by the time of the 1948 elections he supported a policy of initiating some measures of integration.
He led a Boer Commando in the Second Boer War for the Transvaal. During the First World War, he led the armies of South Africa against Germany, capturing German South-West Africa and commanding the British Army in East Africa. From 1917 to 1919, he was also one of the members of the British War Cabinet and he was instrumental in the founding of what became the Royal Air Force (RAF). He became a field marshal in the British Army in 1941, and served in the Imperial War Cabinet under Winston Churchill. He was the only man to sign both of the peace treaties ending the First and Second World Wars." - Wikipedia
Above: Famous Jazz Club (located under St George's Cathedral).
Above Left: Large Peace March, led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Above Right: A piece of the Berlin Wall.
Above Left: The museums that we will visit in 2 days.
Above Right: An Anti Child-Violence Poster that we saw.
Above: The Company House - Former Residence of the Dutch East India Company (the Company).
Above Left: The High Court Civil Annex - 1898.
Above Right: A sample White's Only Bench (people keep stealing the benches).
Above Left: Dennis Struck - Equal Rights Protagonist.
Above Right: We saw this kid while on the Walking Tour and we wanted to come back to buy a CD or two. When we came back after the tour, we could not find him. I saw him once again but I was on a moving city bus.
Above: A mural of European Settlers in South Africa.
Above: City Library and City Hall (facing the sun in the north).
Above: We're standing in the 'Grand Parade' looking south at Table Mountain.
Fort de Goede Hoop (Fort of Good Hope)
Above: Fort de Goede Hoop (Fort of Good Hope).
Above: Lunch on the Commons (Fort de Goede Hoop).
Above Left: Oddly, this faces due north and overlooks Strand Street, 'Strand' is Dutch for Beach, and the beach literally came up to Beach Street once upon a time. All structures beyond the street in this view are the result of multiple landfill programs over time. The current coast line is about a mile away (2 km) now.
Above Right: Looking south toward Table Mountain.
A Walk About and some Museum Visits
(Some Museums Did NOT Allow Photos)
Above: Hair Styles, we've seen a good many of these styles. We're walking around Cape Town.
Above: Both Squirrels were observed just south of St George's Church.
Thus ended our walk about Cape Town, we quite enjoyed ourselves.
