South Africa - Bicycle Tour Adventure, Day 12
Pictures and Stories About Bicycle Adventures
Tandem Bicycle Tour - Zulu & Boer Farm Country
(KwaZulu Natal Province: Inanda, Intuthuko ...);
Vehicle Travel to Durban, South Africa; 19 Nov 2014
Morning Vehicle Drive to near Inanda
(Inanda is North of Durban and East of Lesotho)
Bicycle Tour Through Farm Country
(Zulu and Boer, Boer is Afrikaans for Farmer)
Above Left: Our bicycle starting point, Bruyns Hill [Hardware] Store.
Above Right: Terry makes some last second load security adjustments while I sneak a picture of our curious companions.
Above Left: Sometimes I can find this place on a Google or Bing Map but usually not. The photo was taken near our start point for the day's bike ride
Above Right: Sugar Cane fields.
Above Left: Sugar Cane fields.
Above Right: Sometimes called Aloe Trees.
Above Left: Sugar Cane field workers.
Above Right: New growth Sugar Cane.
Above Left: Fancy Security Wire.
Above Right: Farm Land and Homes.
Above Left: Most properties seem to have a Rondavel.
Above Right: This seems to be a conversion from an old business structure to a home with a stucco/mud type of brick cover.
Above Left: This seemed to be one of the last Sugar Cane plantings that we saw. It is a family farm level of planting and not a large industrial planting.
Above Right: A Christian Church, the only one that I remember seeing in the rural countryside.
Above Left: Another farm with a Rondavel.
Above Right: We have now entered into the Escarpment, we will have up and down slopes ahead for the remainder of the day. We were following an ancient chasm through the Escarpment.
Above Left: A downhill run. All hillsides have houses. It is a densely populated area.
Above Right: An overview of a home and it also has a Rondavel.
Above Left: This is the same homestead as the previous photo; a Wahlberg Eagle has flown into the picture.
Above Right: Same canyon, a Yellowbilled Kite is speeding along.
Above Left: A Wahlberg Eagle has full flaps (flying slow just above stall speed) and is steering with the elevator (tail feathers, one side up, other side down).
Above Right: More up and down travel.
Above Left: A short downhill run, a walker on the road (this is common).
Above Right: A pre-school, all schools are fenced compounds and have only one entrance/exit.
Above Left: A cattleman, near the school entrance, is escorting his cows up the hillside.
Above Right: I've learned this maneuver, if I hold up my camera, the young men from ages 7 to 18 will give a spontaneous 'cool-guy' pose.
Analysis: School Uniforms are mandatory, this is still early morning, two sets of kids are going to two different schools (presumably High School and Middle School), and the guy in stripes is probably a HS Grad walking his bro(s) to school - Just guessing.
Above Panoramic view of our latest hill crossing.
Above Left: Clear River - The Arrow Leaf Plant is like Taro Plant.
This is the edge of Crocodile country, I never saw any, but ...
Above Right: A view downstream (west).
Above Left: Girls waiting at a bus stop.
Above Right: Guys in Yellow are sanitation workers - This is our travel route.
Above: Large Succulents in the river bed.
"One of the Euphorbia species, Extremely poisonous!" - Jannes K (South Africa)
Above: Our destination (not a single city or village sign all day). From here, we were driven into Durban (pop 3.5 million).
We had another wonderful tandem bicycle ride in Africa.
